Of the varied types that served with distinction in the RFC/RAF during WWI those products of de Havilland stand apart. From the DH1 and DHla pushers of 1915 to the DH10 Amiens bomber of 1918, the company provided a number of excellant fighting machines that served British airmen well. Among them are classic types already featured in our DATAFILE series — the DH2, DH5 and the formentioned DH10 with Specials currently in preparation for the mercurial DH4 and long-serving 'Nine Ack'. In profiling the DH9 this DATAFILE plugs another long-standing gap in our canon and Jack Bruce ably documents the type's troubled history, supporting his narrative with a wonderfully diverse collection of archive photographs. There have been other monographs devoted to the 'Nine' but this volume will probably remain the definitive study. Published on the 80th Anniversary of the Armistice, DATAFILE No.72 is a worthy tribute to this somewhat flawed two seater reconnaissance machine.
