One aspect of the subject, however, has not, until recently, received its fair share of attention, namely, the clothing, equipment, and weapons of the combatants themselves; and those recent publications, which attempt to deal with this aspect, have been very poorly researched, and do little more than help perpetuate various old and discredited assumptions. Hence the need for the present book, the research for which has been carried out over a period of twenty years or so, and which was originally intended to form part of the section of C.C.P. Lawson’s History of the Uniforms of the British Army, dealing with the British cavalry from 1812-1816.
