Originally published while the war was still raging, this book was written by Alan Bott, an Observer with 70 Squadron RFC following his transfer from the Royal Garrison Artillery. He joined 70 Squadron in time for it to be the first RFC Squadron equipped with the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter (a nickname owing to the Strut arrangement, the official name is Sopwith Land Clerget Tractor, not quite as catchy), the first British aircraft to enter service with a synchronised machine gun (firing through the spinning propellor's arc), as well as having a single Lewis gun on a Scarff ring for the Observer.
