With the ending of the Second World War in 1945, there ended also the great alliance of nations that had defeated Germany and Japan. Within a year relationships between Russia and the West were being described in terms of The Cold War and The Iron Curtain. A former Soviet Foreign Minister was using the expression 'Armed Truce' to explain the best that could now be hoped for.
